Evening of Rumi's Poetry with Coleman Barks and Eugene Friesen
Evening of Rumi's Poetry: the guest house - love and gratitude
We will explore the gratitude we feel for the guidance that comes with various "guests."

The ecstatic poetry of 13th century Persian mystic Rumi. Performed by acclaimed translator, Coleman Barks, with four times Grammy award winning cellist, Eugene Friesen

Experience thirteenth-century mystical poet Rumi as you never have before through the resonant, whiskey-and-syrup voice of Coleman Barks, a preeminent poet, scholar, and celebrated interpreter of Rumi's work. He is bard in the truest sense of the word. Coleman's extraordinary recitation is gracefully accompanied by the music of Eugene Friesen, an artist who connects the earthy incense of Rumi's words with the celestial strings of the cello. In this exquisite performance, Heaven and Earth unite in one of the most stunningly beautiful expressions of music and poetry that you will ever experience.

Coleman Barks was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was educated at the University of North Carolina and the University of California at Berkeley. He taught poetry and creative writing at the University of Georgia for thirty years. Coleman is the author of numerous Rumi translations and has been a student of Sufism since 1977. His work with Rumi was the subject of an hour-long segment in Bill Moyers's Language of Life series on PBS, and he is a featured poet and translator in Bill Moyers's poetry special, "Fooling with Words." He is the father of two grown children and the grandfather of four. He lives in Athens, Georgia. http://www.colemanbarks.com/

Eugene Friesen - Maverick cellist and four-time Grammy Award-winner Eugene Friesen is active internationally as a concert and recording artist, composer, conductor and teacher. Eugene has worked and recorded with such diverse artists as Dave Brubeck, Martin Sexton, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Dar Williams, Will Ackerman, and Dream Theater.
Eugene's passion for improvised music has been featured in concerts all over the world with the Paul Winter Consort and with Trio Globo (Friesen, Howard Levy and Glen Velez). Recording credits include five albums of original music, more than 30 CDs with the Paul Winter Consort, and hundreds of tracks featuring his rapturous cello playing on instrumental albums, films, and television scores.

Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi was a Persian poet who lived during the 13th century. Rumi was an avid believer in the power of music, poetry, and dance as a direct path to God. Whether you are Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, or Muslim, Rumi's prolific descriptions of love, devotion, and divine illumination cut through the layers of religious dogma, cultural belief, and historic circumstance, leading us all to the mystical core that silently waits within every major spiritual tradition.
